The Howgate

The first pool on the beat is the Howgate. To access this pool you can either park next to the road in the small layby or walk up along the road from the top of the viaduct. Climb down the steep bank adn there is a path along the side to the top of the pool.

Fish lie on our side of the pool

The Viaduct

The second pool is the Viaduct. Here the railway used to cross the river and the concrete supports can still be seen. There is a parking space near the top of the pool or you can walk up from the lower pools. To fish the upper part of the pool cross over onto the smaller island, walk up and cross to the second island. Walk to the top of this and fish down from there. The upper section is a faster stream before it slows down for the lower section. Fish can be taken the whole way down this pool. In very high water fish can be taken from the middle of the pool fishing from the bank from the bush below the island down.

The Boat Pool

Accessed either from walking down from the viaduct or up the path from the hut. Fish lie down the far bank and are mostly caught around the bend and down to the burn mouth.

Rough Hough

Park at the entrance to the Thornielee Forrestry road, along the road and either over the fence or through the gate to a track that will take you down to the river and the hut. Next to the hut is the Rough Hough. Start fishing at the end of the trees and fish the whole way down past the stones on our side. Usually thought of as two pools, Upper rough hough and the stone. The upper section can be easily fished from the bank but requires wading down to the stone.
