Ashiestiel
Ashiestiel was once the home of Sir Walter Scott before he moved to nearby Abbotsford, and it is said that he would never have left if he had been able to buy the property. Many of his famous poems were written there, including The Lay of the Last Minstrel and Marmion. Indeed JMW Turner, a great friend of Scott, painted Ashiestiel House as the frontispiece for Marmion.
The house is now currently available as a weekly let. This is ideal for family holidays, shooting and fishing parties.
This is a popular beat amongst Upper Tweed fishers, who return year after year. It is located opposite Nest and just above Peel, in spectacular countryside with a diverse range of wildlife. The beat consists of two miles of the right bank and there are six named pools.
It is fished by six rods, fishing three sub-beats in pairs, rotating at the middle and end of each day. A full time ghillie is employed during the autumn.
The large riverside hut is located in the middle of the beat, which you can get your car to. Facilities in the autumn include the provision of tea and coffee.
Although extensive work has been carried out to the river banks and access roads over the past couple of years, access to some of the remainder of the beat requires some walking.
Sea trout appear here in early summer, enjoying the shady valley. The owners are keen to encourage fishing for these, at a nominal charge, so please telephone for further details.
The owner's family reserve the right to fish a seventh rod but only when conditions are favourable.
